The Greek National Team started its preparation for 2016 in Bochum in Germany where it participated in the “mybet 4 nations cup”.
The coach Apostolis Gkaifyllias had the opportunity to test the “chemistry” between experienced and younger players. He invited players that played in different past seasons since 2013 and afterwards and also 3 rookies: Andreas Mantis (Athens), Apostolis Strebas (Athens) and Antonis Koutsoukos (Patra) who all of them go through a fantastic year with their Minifootball clubs in the Total UNI-League in Greece.
The team trained 3 times and played 4 matches vs Germany, France and England. The first match went badly for the Greek team and they lost 3-1 to the host country. In the second game vs France, the score was again 3-1 five minutes before the end, however, the Greek Team found the way to score 2 goals and come to a draw. It could have got even better, as at the end of the match the Greeks lost an unbelievable chance to win the match. With that draw, and having collected only 1 point in 2 matches, in the last game it needed a win with minimum 2 goals difference against England. The Greeks scored twice in the middle of second half, then the English scored a goal for the 2-1, and immediately afterwards Andreas Drenova with an impressive run, beat 2 players and passed to Taramas to make it 3-1. The English tried a system with 6 players on field without goalkeeper and eventually, the Greeks scored other 3 goals for the final score of 6-1. The win meant they qualified to the final where they met again Germany and this time they won in penalties in total score 4-3 (1-1, pen. 3-2).
It was only a friendly tournament but the importance of these experiences is huge for all the players. This was the reason from the very beginning why the 4 teams participated and all coaches (Muller, Gkaifyllias, Da Silveira, Cousins) admitted that it will be very important for the preparation of their teams for Hungary.
The Greek and Cypriot Minifootball Association will announce soon the next call for the players. It is possible that in early June the team will run one training camp in Athens in order to test more players and finally the coach will make his last calls later in the summer for a preparation that will last probably 2 weeks. The Greek Team starts from the 3rd pot and needs concentration, teamwork, will and effort in order to qualify, since they will meet Croatia and England in the groups stage in EMF EURO 2016.
